Both Tyler and Katelyn Myers out of the hospital | People

After months in the hospital 8-year-old Katelyn Myers was released Monday.

Her brother 12-year-old Tyler Myers was released in January. The two Long Beach residents were hospitalized in November following a freak accident that left the two children with severe second and third degree burns all over their bodies. Katelyn suffered burns over 85 percent of her body. Tyler's burns were mainly on his face, arms, and legs.

They have been at Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, GA. From feeding tubes, ventilators, surgeries to removing dead skin and skin grafts the children are starting to get back a sense of normalcy.

Community members, as well as, the Long Beach School District have pulled together to raise money to help the family with medical expenses.

There aunt, Amber Allen said the family has been renting a home in Augusta. She said the family doesn't have health insurance and both children are on Medicaid so help from community members is a tremendous plus.

Allen said the Myers parents Elisha and Shannon are very happy to have the children out of the hospital and together at home in Augusta, GA. But just because the children are out of the hospital doesn't mean they can leave yet.

"The children have to stay in Augusta for at least another week before they can head back to Long beach because they need to have checkups," Allen said.

Home Depot volunteers remodeled the Myer's mobile home free of charge. They made it wheel chair accessible.

"Katelyn is going to be on and off of a wheel chair," Allen added. "The hospital is going to pay to fly the family home to Mississippi. Katelyn is still dealing with a lot of pain and isn't able to move very well. Tyler is dealing a little better. He is up and moving around. He can't sleep well, due to bad nightmares."

Katelyn still has numerous surgeries ahead of her. Allen said she’ll have to undergo surgeries until she’s about 20 or 21-years-old.

On Saturday, March 9, St. Thomas Community Center will hold a drawdown starting at 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Tickets are on sale now for $25, which admits two people. The draw down will give away $2,500, there's also going to be a silent auction, live music and food. You don't have to be present to win.
