Two new programs working to prevent child abuse

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX)- Here's a shocking statistic: Child abuse in South Mississippi is up 300 percent since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

That's upsetting to anyone, but especially those who work with abused and neglected children.

"We have more children in custody, then we ever had before," said Hope Haven Executive Director Terry Latham.

Memorial Day: It's a National Holiday, a long weekend that kicks off the summer vacation season. Many of us get the day off. How will you spend your long weekend?

USM puts campus beautification on hold, encourages donations to Oklahoma

HATTIESBURG, MS (WLOX)- Southern Miss is taking a break from its tornado relief fundraising efforts in deference to the tragedy in Oklahoma.

The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation announced Wednesday that they would refrain from publicly soliciting donors for the tornado relief and campus beautification campaigns.

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX)- Two WLOX viewers sent in pictures of this waterspout spotted Wednesday morning in the Mississippi Sound.

According to Doppler Radar Imagery, the waterspout was offshore near Long Beach and Pass Christian moving east at 35 knots.

It's associated with an approaching upper level low and thunderstorm complex.

Today, rain chances are 50 percent and highs are in the low to mid 80s. If you spot a waterspout take shelter because it could move on shore.

Mississippi is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and the American Red Cross urges residents to take steps now to stay safer when severe weather threatens.
 
“After recent severe weather and tornadoes across several states, this is the time to stop what you’re doing and make sure you and your family are prepared," said Don Stephens, emergency services director. “Create a disaster preparedness plan now before our community is threatened by high winds, hail, lightning and excessive rainfall.”
 

Harrison County developing new policy for industry tax breaks

Whether used for an existing plant improvement or to attract new industry, tax breaks are the competitive currency of government.

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX)- Harrison County may soon have a new policy for granting tax exemption" to business and industry.

That issue of tax breaks has sparked some lively debate among county supervisors in recent months. But new procedures in the works could make future decisions a bit easier.

"We're granting these tax exemptions constantly. And we're struggling. And I just can't understand how we can continue to do this right now?" asked Harrison County Supervisor Marlin Ladner during a recent debate over granting a tax exemption.
